Emergency Dental Care

A dental emergency is a situation that requires prompt attention from a dental professional. At our office, we understand that you cannot always plan when you will need our care. If you experience a dental emergency, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible. Our team will schedule you to meet with our dentist as soon as we are able so you can receive the care you need. We are happy to care for several types of dental emergencies, including:

  • Severe, lasting toothaches or other types of tooth pain
  • A lost dental restoration, such as a lost filling or crown
  • Damage to the soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, lips and gums
  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • A chipped or broken tooth
  • A partially or fully knocked-out tooth

Don’t Ignore Dental Pain and Discomfort

Injury to your teeth or gums has the potential to be very serious and shouldn’t be ignored.  Ignoring pain and discomfort in your mouth can lead to more permanent damage requiring more extensive treatment. Our office phone line will connect you directly to our on-call emergency dentist who will return your call promptly if we are unable to immediately answer you call.  Let us know the cause of your pain, where in your mouth or jaw the pain is located, and any other details to help our dentists act quickly.

Please Note:

Due to allergies, we ask our patients to kindly refrain from wearing perfume. We appreciate your cooperation.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While accidents happen, many dental emergencies can be avoided with a few simple precautions. Here are some tips to help protect your teeth and avoid unexpected visits:

  • Wear a Mouthguard: If you participate in contact sports or activities with a risk of impact, a custom-fitted mouthguard can prevent chipped or knocked-out teeth.

  • Avoid Hard Foods: Refrain from chewing ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candies that can crack or chip teeth.

  • Don’t Use Teeth as Tools: Using your teeth to open bottles, tear packages, or hold objects can lead to fractures or loosened dental work.

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing twice daily, flossing, and attending regular dental checkups can help prevent decay and infection that may lead to emergencies.

  • Address Dental Issues Early: Don’t ignore tooth pain, swelling, or sensitivity—these can be signs of a developing issue that’s easier (and less costly) to treat early.

Being proactive about your oral health is the best way to stay out of the emergency chair.

FAQS

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or a knocked-out or broken tooth are all signs you should seek immediate care. If you’re unsure, give us a call—we’ll help you determine the urgency.

How can I manage pain until I get to the dentist?

Over-the-counter pain relievers (like ibuprofen) can help. Rinsing with warm salt water and applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek may also provide relief.

What if I lose a crown or filling?

Try to save the crown or filling and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can help protect the exposed area until you’re seen.

Can I wait until morning or Monday?

Some issues can wait, but others—like infection, trauma, or intense pain—require urgent care. When in doubt, call our office. We’ll guide you on the best next steps.

Welcome to “Tooth be Told with Becki”!

If we haven’t already met, let me introduce myself.  My name is Becki, and I’m a registered dental assistant at Drs. Rosen and Dworkin.  I started my dental career in 2008 at the front desk.  I was curious to know what happened clinically, and the doctor I worked for encouraged me to get my dental radiology license in 2011.  I was encouraged again to become a CDA (Certified Dental Assistant).  Once achieved, I pursued my RDA (Registered Dental Assistant) license.

As an RDA for Drs. Rosen and Dworkin since 2017, I understand how this practice is different than others.  Our longevity (over 40 years) is a testimony of how we care for our patients and families; some 4 generations deep!  As an employee, your growth is supported, and teamwork is evident (whether it’s a supportive hug or a good belly laugh!).  As part of my growth, I added the role of Safety Officer in 2024.  I was fortunate to win an essay contest hosted by The Dale Foundation in 2025, through which I received my CDIPC (Certified in Dental Infection Prevention and Control) certification and proudly add those initials to the end of my name!  What’s next???

I began writing in 2026, and have two published articles (Infection Control Today, Clean Bite: No Time for April Foolin’ With PPE | Infection Control Today April 2026, and The Dental Assistant Journal, Dental Assistants Journal August 2026  “Dental Anxiety:  Battling the Beast”).  Blessed with the gift of gab and vocabulary, Drs. Rosen and Dworkin have graciously offered me an opportunity to begin a monthly article to share with all of you!

“Tooth Be Told with Becki” will be a place where you can find interesting fun facts, tidbits about our employees, things we are celebrating, practice happenings, and information you may be curious about when it comes to dental health.  Tooth be told...I’m very excited to dive in with all of you!   Will my article in October be spooktacular?  Come along with me on this new journey and see!
